DMAA is a chemical compound with molecular formula C7H17N and CAS number 105-41-9. The substance is known to the chemists under several different names, among them methylhexanamine, methylhexamine, 1,3-dimethylamylamine (1,3-DMAA), dimethylamylamine, 4-methylhexan-2-amine, etc. Among its trade names, most often are used Forthane and Geranamine. DMAA was first introduced to public in 1944 as an inhaled nasal decongestant, but later it was withdrawn.

The compound itself is a liquid with amine odor. It belongs to aliphatic amines. Here are the main properties of methylhexanamine:

  • molecular weight: 115.22 g/mol,
  • boiling point: 132.5 °C,
  • index of refraction: nD25 1.4150-1.4175,
  • density: 0.7655 g/cm3 at 20 °C

The chemical is only slightly soluble in water. However, it easily dissolves in ethanol, ether, chloroform, and dilute acid.

Hazards and Safety

Both liquid and vapor of DMAA are flammable. The substance should be kept in cool place, far from any sparks, heat, open flame, or hot surfaces. In case of fire, water spray, dry chemical, alcohol-resistant foam, or carbon dioxide can be used to fight it.

This chemical is corrosive to human tissues. When on skin it causes severe burns, if in eyes, it leads to a serious damage. Inhalation of its fume or vapor may cause respiratory irritation. That is why personal protective equipment is a must when handling DMAA.
